In this dissertation , I investigate the relationship between corporate governance and corporate performance and the impact of corporate governance on corporate performance in Egypt. I use a unique governance index that rates firm’s corporate governance using six different categories depending on literature review and Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) . These categories are combined in a single overall index to reflect the score of firm’s governance. I measured the financial performance by return on equity , return on asset , tobin’s q and market value to book value .
In a sample of 91 firms from Egypt , I found on the firm-level that significant positive correlation between corporate governance and return on equity , return on asset , and market value to book value. I used multi-regression with and without corporate governance to determine the impact of corporate governance on firm’s performance . I found that corporate governance had a significant positive impact on firm’s performance measured by return on equity and return on asset.
