Abstract

One of the important components of any sustainable development is the road safety. The use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) as a gathering tool of a rapid and high quality road safety spatial data acquisition, is consider the most important data sources for such systems is updated spatial locations, physical conditions, and other attributes of infrastructure objects. For that reason, the use of road safety studies, based on GPS observation and GIS data in which attributes and map data on digital unit are stored in the same database, should be introduced. That observation technique will enhance the two main parts of road safety studies. First, in Network Screening; this technique will help the road safety analysts to identify more accurate sites with higher-than-expected accident frequencies and Sites whose accident frequencies are not higher than expected, but which nevertheless experience sufficient numbers of accidents that may potentially be improved in a cost-effective manner. Second, will help the road analysts in Diagnosis stage to identify and focus on the real problems at specific sites. The aim of this thesis is to undertake a research about advantages of GPS as rapid and accurate method for measuring road safety and its uses in implementing a multipurpose geographic information system (GIS) for sustainable development. For this reason, we will present some aspects of the existing factors affecting in road safety and their shortcomings. On the other hand, we outline the possibilities of using a simple interface program for all users to enhance the road safety on the highways. The comparison between the road features with a various weights and the other factors of designing and implementing existing road ways systems between Cairo and Mansoura Cities are discussed.
