Abstract

There have been clinical trials of gene therapy since 1990. The first attempt to treat a disease targeted a form of severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) due to defects in the gene encoding adenosine deaminase. At the start of 1997, more than 200 gene therapy protocols had been approved and more than 2100 patients had received gene therapy, over 1700 of these in the United States. But this field suffered some setbacks, such as the unfortunate fatal case of a non-life-threatening disease as demonstrated by the 1999 death of teenager Jesse Gelsinger and the recent discovery that one of the SCID-X1-treated patients developed a leukemia-like condition. This is leading to return of gene therapy research to zero point. The successful use of gene therapy to correct rare immune system disorders has highlighted the enormous potential of such therapies such as cancer, hemophilia,SCID,AIDS,diabetes mellitus, cystic fibrosis, duchene muscular dystrophies, fetal gene therapy
