Abstract Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema and hyper cholesterolemia. It is now believed that free radicals have an important role in the pathogenesis of nephrotic syndrome. Antioxidants has been used in treatment ofhephrotic syndrome in experimental animals and gave good results. Our aim is to study the role of antioxidants when given with corticosteroids in the treatment ofnephrotic syndrome in pediatrics. Our study was carried out in Pediatrics Department of Zagazing University Hospital from January 2003 to September 2003 and included 80 children which are clssified into three groups. Group I, comprising 30 nephrotic patients given the ordinary corticosteroids regimen for one month. Group II, comprising 30 nephrotic patients given the ordinary corticosteroids regimen in addition to the antioxidants formula for one month. Group III involved 20 healthy children selected as the control group. Oxidative stress byproducts were measured which are Malondialdehyde and nitric oxide. And antioxidants (Vitamin E, Zinc, Selenium and Catalase) in our 80 children. These measurements had been done twice, one at the start of the study and the other at the end of one-month of treatment |
