Abstract CHEMICAL STUDIES ON MANAGEMENT OF LIQUID RADIOACTIVE WASTES USING ZEOLITES Mohamed Ragheb Mohamed Azab El-Naggar The Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science In Chemistry To Department of Chemistry Faculty of Science Zagazig University The problem of radioactive waste management has been raised from the beginning use of nuclear energy for different purposes. The radwaste streams from these purposes were sufficient to cause dangerous effects to man and its environment. Inorganic ion exchangers are the preferred materials to select radioisotopes from low and intermediate levels aqueous nuclear wastes for their radiation and thermal stability, and high compatibility with cement containment. The main aim of the present work is to study the use of synthetic zeolite to remove radioisotopes with long half-lives from aqueous solutions, studying of ion exchange capacities, distribution coefficients, influence of pH, kinetic experiments, and uptake percent of radioisotopes. Also, the immobilization of spent synthetic zeolite with Portland cement have been investigated. The main factors affecting the characterization of the final solidified waste product such as mechanical strength, leaching behavior of radioactive isotopes in addition to the other factors affecting on cement blocks to ensure final and safe disposal have been studied |
