Abstract

A technological sample of gibbsite ore material about 40% Al(OH)3 was collected from Abu Zeneima area in west central Sinai . This sample assays 1.01% Cu, 0.43 Zn and 0.04% U. The present work is mainly concerned with the chemical processing of this ore material in order to recover marketable product of these metal values. For this purpose two main leaching techniques were used. In the former , H2 SO4 acid was able to dissolve the four study metal values. The obtained acid leach liquor was properly treated to recover U,Al,Cu and Zn . Uranium was recovered using Amberlite IRA-400 anion exchange resin (Divinyl benzene,, 8% cross linking). While Cu was recovered by cementation method using Zn . The total Zn was recovered - after Al hydrolytic recovery- by precipitation of its hydroxide at PH 8.4.

In the Alkali leaching , Bayer process of leaching alumina with caustic soda was applied to the ore after addition of some ¬Na2CO3 to leach U simultaneously . In this technique, Cu and Zn were left behind to be later acid leached . Uranium can be recovered from the Alkali leach liquor by the anion exchange resin after Al precipitation.

All the obtained data are finally formulated in the form of two integrated flowsheets. The first is a single-leach flowsheet whlie the second is a double-leach flowsheet .
