Abstract

The liver performs many essential functions, that it considers as the primary site of biotransformation and detoxification of toxins or xenobiotic (Lee, 1995) as it contains the highest concentration of enzymes involved in phase I oxidation-reduction reactions (Guegenrich, 1994). In addition, the liver acts as the target organ responsible for synthesis of bile acids involved in the absorption of lipids and fat-soluble vitamins. Moreover, liver is responsible of synthesis, storage, and breakdown of glycogen; the synthesis of albumin; clotting factors and the metabolism of lipids (Dutezak et al., 1991). Furthermore, liver plays an important role in the excretion of metals such as iron, copper, zinc and manganese (Klaasen, 1976).
Liver exposure to exogenous toxin or xenobiotic caused general disruption of these important functions results in some disorders such as hypoalbuminemia, accumulation of fat and increase level of ammonia (Crawfored, 1999). Different medicinal plants were used for management of liver disease via its antioxidative, anti-lipidperoxidative, and liver regenerating effects (Ammon and Wahl, 1991 and Luper, 1998).
The goal of this study is to see the effect of natural drugs or substances on repairing and hence management of this induced dysfunction of liver cells induced by CCl4 administration. To achieve this aim we use some natural agents as taurine, silymarine and curcumin.
Some important parameters that may be considered as good indicators for evaluation of liver function. These parameters include aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), blood glucose, total protein, albumin and globulin levels.
Histopathological examination of liver was performed to record any pathological changes and asses any improvement in liver status.
