Abstract

Despite the marked improvement in the care, monitoring and treatment, Retinopathy of. Prematurity (ROP) continues to be an important problem in premature infants. The exact etiology ofROP is still unknown but a large number of factors are suggested to be involved in the development of the disease, of which oxygen is but one factor. This study presents the incidence, severity and some possible risk factors of ROP. All preterm neonates admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Zagazig University Hospital from the period of March 2002 to March 2003 with a gestational age :s 34 weeks or whose body weight was less than 1500 gm were included in the study. Our study included 100 preterm neonates; only 40 cases who continue up to 28 days and underwent indirect ophthalmoscopic examination. Others either died due to sepsis ( 48 cases) or discharged before eye examination ( 12 cases). The results showed that the incidence ofROP was found in 25 out of 40 preterm infants (the incidence was 62.5%), and 15 out of 40 were normal (37.5%). The incidence of the various stages ofROP was as follows: 11 cases showed stage I (27.5%) of all studied cases 6 cases showed stage II (15%) of all studied cases 6 cases showed stage III (15%) of all studied cases 1 case showed stage IV (2.5%) of all studied cases 1 case showed stage V (2.5%) of all studied cases.
