CONCLUSIONS
The drastic differences in the reported nuclear data (such as the thermal neutron cross sections, resonance integrals and gamma-ray intensities) keep the use of the absolute method to neutron activation analysis is inconvenient. The use of k0 standardization solves the problem where the measured k0 values replace and integrate the nuclear constants by a compound nuclear constant. The present work verifies this fact from calculations and tabulation of:
(1) Absolute thermal neutron intrinsic sensitivities,
(2) A comparison between the absolute and analytical k0 of gamma ray lines using gold as a single comparator,
(3) A comparison between the analytical and absolute values of the resonance integral to thermal neutron cross-section ratios, and
(4) A comparison between the calculated analytical and absolute isotopic thermal neutron intrinsic sensitivities.
The high precision of the k0 standardization leads to an acceptable precision in the analytical values of the nuclear constants and the careful monitoring of experimental conditions. Consequently it becomes possible to calculate the mass of an element by means of the so-called activation equation and were calculated and tabulated is proving.
The work done at the Institute for Nuclear Science (INW, Gent/Belgium) presented in this thesis shows the importance of the precision of the activation analysis parameters (f, α, Q0 and Ēr) in achieving high precision elemental analysis by k0 standardization. The determination of f and α parameters for an irradiation box at the core periphery of the ET-RR-2 reactor is also supporting this fact. Investigation of an aluminum foil and some Egyptian iron ore samples stand as an application.
