Abstract Intravenous immunoglobulin is a therapeutic preparation of normal human IgG obtained from plasma pooled from a large number of healthy blood donors. It is initially introduced as a replacement therapy for patients with primary and secondary immune deficiencies. It is now widely used for the treatment of a number of autoimmune and systemic inflammatory diseases. IVIG has been used in managing patients with a variety of dermatologic disorders under the appropriate circumstances. These include dermatomyositis, Kawasaki’s disease, a number of autoimmune bullous diseases, severe adverse drug reactions, and other autoimmune and/or allergic conditions, such as atopic dermatitis IVIG is well tolerated, and there are no reports of exacerbation of illness in patients undergoing IVIG administration. Although it is safe treatment it is not entirely benign, and monitoring during infusion is important. The major drawbacks of IVIG are its expense and frequent shortage in its availability. |
