Abstract Hyperthyroidism in the elderly is a serious clinical problem both for the individual and for health services providers. Hypothyroidism has shown an increased prevalence and incidence among the elderly. Its clinical manifestations may be less obvious in the setting of somatic complaints and other conditions related to aging. Non thyroidal illness (sick euthyroid syndrome) is defined as abnormal thyroid functions during severe extrathyroidal illness. It is reported in stress, starvation, bypass surgery, bone marrow transplantation and severe medical illness as chronic renal or hepatic failure. The management of thyroid cancer in an older patient is the same as that in a younger individual. |
