Abstract

Incorporation of drugs into inert polymeric films during their manufacture affords a possible method of achieving controlled release. S11ch products can be adapted to be topical, oral and other routes of administration by utilizing them directly or in the form of coating films. Dr11g release may be altered by variations of the dimensional parameters of the film, the polymeric matrix material and the concelltration in the film . Inert and insoluble matrices of plastic natures were shown to exhibit time-dependent release profiles. Dermatological films was reported to be preferable when compared to ointments or creams due to the following reasons:
(i) Releasing drw: ~ in a sustained profile over a reasonable time .
(ii) Flexibility of the dose included in the film.
(iii) Easy to terminate therapy by removing the film.
Selection of lhe best film composition for any particular use requires studying lhe mechanical properties of the film, the moisture absorption and drug release. Tetracaine hydrochloride is a local anesthetic of ester-type used topically on the eye, in the nose or throat and by infiltration for subm:lchnoid block (pinal analgesia). 1t is available in various topical formula! ions. It has <J short duration of action and frequent applications are usually required. On this basis, we can formulate tetracaine hydrochloride in polymeric films, which may control the drug delivery over a reasonable period of time.
