Abstract Splenectomy is done in many hematological indications in” " ~ " ” childhood which vary according to the type of the hematologic disorder and the age of the child. Congenital spherocytosis is a dominently inherited hemol¬ytic anemia with an intrinsic abnormality of the erythrocytic membrane giving rise to erythrocytes that are small and spher¬oid witha, decreased life span. Splenectomy completely cures the hemolytic disease even thought the bone marrow continues to make spherocytes and the appearance of peripheral blood smearis unchanged. Thalassemia is a, congenital disorde” " ~ " ” in which the anemia is due to a defect in haemoglobin synthesis. Splenectomy will eventually becomes necessary in most patients with thalassemia major. Sickle cell disease is a heriditary hemolytic anemia characterized by the presence of crescent shaped erythrocytes which because of a lack of deformability are trapped in the splenic cords • The auto-immune hemolytic anemias ar8 these in which the affected patients produce antibodies against their own red blood cells with a shortened red cell life span invivo. The role of the spleen in AI H.A. is that the spleen represent a source of antibody formation and antibody coated red cell sequestration. |
