Abstract

Background: Haemorrhoids involve any age and affecting both males and females equally. Rubber band ligation (RBL) is the most commonly performed out-patient treatment for symptomatic haemorrhoids and provide a cure for majority of the patients. Objective: Retrospective study of cases of haemorrhoids that were treated by rubber band ligation in colorectal surgery unit out-patient clinic of Mansoura University Hospitals from June 1998 to June 2006 as regard of post procedure complication as pain, bleeding, urine retention, fecal incontinence, patients’ satisfaction and outcome of the procedure.
Methods & Results:
Data of 550 patients were retrieved from archived files of our colorectal surgery unit. Supplemental information was obtained from telephone follow up. Male were 427 patients, while 123 patients were females. Rectal bleeding was the most common symptom (91.27%) followed by prolapse (72.18%) and pain (14%). from 550 patients (6.9%) were of 1st degree haemorrhoids, 78.5% were of 2nd degree haemorrhoids and 14.6% were of 3rd degree haemorrhoids. Total number of haemorrhoids ligated is 1291 haemorrhoids in 635 sessions. Single session was performed in 86% of the cases.
In this study 90.18% of patients were cured. Incidence of post-banding complication was 21.05% in first degree haemorrhoids, 19.2% in second degree haemorrhoids and 30% in third degree haemorrhoids. Post banding pain occurred in 59 cases (10.73%). No post ligation urine retention, massive bleeding or stenosis was reported and all patients were normally continent. No significant changes between pre-banding and post-banding manometry were found in our study. Four hundred and fifty three patients (82.36%) were satisfied of the procedure. 3
Conclusion: Rubber band ligation can be used in treatment of uncomplicated first, second and third haemorrhoids in our outpatient clinics as it is an efficient and safe procedure that can be repeated and does not need anaesthesia, so can be used in risky patients. Rubber band ligation also save time for hospital admission.
