Abstract

The study area lies to the east of Greater Cairo in a narrow district extending from the Nuclear Materials Authority building to the Observatory of Qattamiya to the east. The Study area is bounded by latitudes 29° 58’ 59’’ & 29° 55’ 56’’ N and longitudes 31° 24’ 14’’ & 31° 49’ 41’’ E. The main results can be summarize as follows. I- Lithostratigraphically, The studied Eocene successions in the three studied sections were assigned to the following rock units (from the oldest to the youngest): 1- Observatory Formation: It includes two members arranged from the oldest to the youngest as follows: (a- Upper Building Stone Member, b- Giushi Member) 2- Qurn Formation II- The studied microfacies reveal four limestone microfacies, in addition to the one shale facies.. III- The identified foraminiferal species yielded 67 foraminiferal species belonging to 40 genera and 27 families. IV- Biostratigraphically, the vertical distribution of the benthic foraminifera yielded one foraminiferal biozone: Bulimina jacksonensis - Uvigerina jacksonensis Assemblage Zone including three subzones (arranged from the youngest to the oldest as follows): 3- Quinqueloculina carinata - Eponides ellisorae Zone 2- Bulimina jacksonensis Zone. 1- Uvigerina mediterranea Zone. the vertical distribution of the ostracods yielded three biozones (arranged from the youngest to the oldest as follows): 3- Loxoconcha pseudopunctatella - Asymmetricythere Asymmetrella Assemblage Zone. 2- Loxoconcha vetustopunctatella - Trachyleberis nodosus nodosus Assemblage Zone. 1- Digmocythere ismaili - Uromuellerina saidi Assemblage Zone V- Paleoecologically, The eastern part of the studied area seems to be more shallower than 50 m, close to the edge of the high and was restricted to form lagoonal conditions of slightly hypersaline water and occasionally open shallow marine condition. On the other hand, the western part was relatively deeper open normal marine than in the eastern part but not more than 100 m depth.
