Abstract

This study presents the reliability-based optimization of potable water networks by selecting the optimal pipe diameters for steady state flow under hydraulic reliability. Genetic Algorithm is used in this study to produce optimized diameters, Newton method is used to simulate a given network, and to evaluate the hydraulic reliability of a network using Monte Carlo simulation method. This study presents a developed adaptive penalty method for genetic algorithms. The developed numerical code for optimal design and reliability-based optimization is known as GAMCnet (Genetic Algorithm Monte Carlo Net). Two separate studies are conducted, namely, applications of optimization to water distribution systems and applications of reliability-based optimization. For the first study, four networks are studied (2-loop, Hanoi network, network with a pump, and Suez City potable water supply system). For the reliability-based optimization, it is applied to two case studies (Hanoi network and 2-loop) taking into account the hydraulic failure and component failure. The results of both applications indicate the capability of GAMCnet program to solve various problems of optimization of water distribution systems.
