Abstract

The present work was conducted to study the effect of different ratios of proteins from animal and plant sources as soybean and beef meat on serum glucose, lipid parameters, kidney and liver functions, thyroid hormones (T3, T4 & TSH) and cortisone for diabetic rats, acute renal failure rats, and rats suffering from diabetic and acute renal failure. Healthy male albino rats were divided into four main experimental groups. The first main group: 24 healthy rats (control-), was randomly divided into four subgroups: (1) fed on basal diet as a negative control group, (2) fed on basal diet containing 10% protein (2.5% from soybean + 7.5% from beef meat), (3) fed on basal diet containing 10% protein (5% from soybean + 5% from beef meat) and (4) fed on basal diet containing 10% protein (7.5% from soybean + 2.5% from beef meat). The second main group: 24 rats injected with alloxane (150 mg/kg body weight) to induce hyperglycemia and were randomly divided into the similar four subgroups. The third main group: 24 rats injected with [10ml (v/v glycerol/saline solution)/kg body weight] to induce acute renal failure and were randomly divided into the similar four subgroups. The fourth main group: 24 rats injected with [10ml (v/v glycerol/saline solution)/kg body weight] to induce acute renal failure and followed after one week by injected with alloxane (150 mg/kg body weight) to induce hyperglycemia, and then were randomly divided into the similar four subgroups. The obtained results revealed that, soybean plays an important role in the control of glycemia homeostasis and improve kidney functions for diabetic and acute renal failure rats. It was concluded that the highest levels from soybean (7.5%) realized the best results than the lowest (2.5%) and medium (5%) levels in most parameters.
