Abstract

This work aimed to review the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, screening tests, and therapy of intestinal ischemia. Intestinal ischemia can be broadly classified into acute and chronic forms and into conditions of venous or arterial origin. In the chronic forms of mesenteric ischemia, the viability of the bowel is not compromised, but the blood flow is inadequate to support the functional demands of the intestine, whereas with the acute forms, intestinal viability is threatened. Atherosclerotic narrowing or occlusion of the mesenteric arteries, producing intestinal angina and gradually evolving mesenteric venous thrombosis are the common forms of chronic ischemia. Acute mesenteric ischemia is much more common than chronic and ischemia of arterial origin is much more frequent than venous disease.
