Abstract

Multidrug prescribtion IS the rule In many Andrological diseases. Although the effect of these prescribtions may be sound for treating the clinical condition of the patient, some of these drugs could modify the SHBG level or binding capacity and subsequently sex hormone production, release, binding or action resulting in alterations in the potency or fertility potentials of the male patient and could lead to impotance or infertility. In theory. the administration of drugs which binds to steroid transport protein ”could result ln displacement of endogenous steroids and thereby. increase their bioavailability. Also. drugs that reduce SHBG concentration could result In increased level of bioavailable steroid hormones. On the other hand. drugs that increase SHBG concentration could decrease the level of bioactive T and. to a less extent. E2. The relatively recent availability of identification. purification and measurement of SHBG, also its, major role in determination of the biologically active T and E2 and subsequently its effect on fertility and potency in males make it possible nowaday to study the effects of many drugs on the concentration of such steroid carrier protein.
