Abstract The aim of this study was to determine plasma insu1:Ln and C-peptide levels in patients with hepatosplenic schis¬tosomiasis ill1d diabetes mellitus in order to assess their islet beta cell secretory ao ti vi ty. The pa t t ents were e v a¬luated and compared to patients having either hepatosplenic schistosomiasis or diabetes mellitus alone. This study included 42 cases, 14 patients with combi¬ned hepatosplenic’ schistosomiasis and diabetes mellitus, 9 patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis, 10 patients with diabetes mellitus and 9 healthy individuals of matched age and sex as’ a contro11group. The bilharzial nature of the studied groups was sUGge¬sted by the presence of past history of bilharziasis and antibilharzial treatment, clinical examination and demonst¬ration of bilharzial ova in urine1stool or rectal mucosal biopsy. Cases with past history of jaundice were excluded. The studied groups were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination. The laboratory investigat¬ions included fasting and 2 hours post prandial blood gluc¬ose, blood urea, serum creatinine, liver function tests. |
