Abstract

Enlarged lymph nodes are commonly found in children. In most instances they represent transient responses to benign local or generalized infections-Since many serious disorders can present with lymphadenopathy, however, it 1s important to differentiate between benign lymphoid hyperplasia and lymph node enlargement due to serious conditions such as leukaemia or lymphoma. The assessment of lymph node enlargement in children is difficult because of age related changes that occur in lymphoid tissue. Children characteristically manifest more rapid and exaggerated lymphoid hyperplastic responses to inflammatory stimuli than adults and in addition have relatively more lymphoid tissue. For these reasons, in general, nodes are more commonly palpable than in adults (Lanzkowsky, 1983).
