Abstract

The Norplant system is a long-acting, low dose, prog¬estin only, highly effective and reversible contraceptive method for women. Levonorgestrel ( a synthetic progest¬ogen) is delivered by means of six silastic capsules each of which is approximately 3.4 cm in length and contain 36 mg. The capsules are designed to be implanted subdermally in the upper arm. Both plapement and removal are performed as a minor surgical procedure through a small in¬cision under local anaesthesia. Effectiveness is achieved by the steady release of the progestin from the interior of the capsules through the silastic into the blood. A level of levonorgestrel sufficient to prevent conception is reached 24 hours after placement and is maintained for over more than five years. The stero~d release rate from Norplant implants is approximately 50 ug/day for the first year, )) ug/ day for the second ear and remains constant for the next years. Levonorgestrel subdermal capsules has contraceptive effects within the hypothalamic gonadal axis .
