Abstract

The success of the complete denture service is predi:ated on the maintenance of integrity of the supportive :ral tissues. Alveolar bone maintenance depends on the presence of zealthy roots and periodontal ligaments which transmit Eunctional and parafunctional forces to the surrounding zone. The loss of teeth and periodontal ligaments, and thier replacement by complete dentures, inevitably changes the :attern of force distribution. Force resolution to the lveolar bone from the complete denture base is now in the rm of pressure, which is unfavourably tolerated by the 1veolar bone. The technique of tooth-root retention under complete :entures appears to militate against such a bone resolu: ion. This clinical study described an attempt to determine, hether the submerged non vital canine roots under complete :entures would help to preserve alveolar ridge form or not. The method consisted of clinical crown removal from :-ie retained mandibular canines 2 mm below the crest of _:veolar bone in 47 patients. The operated areas were :Dvered with free autogenous gingival grafts, 17 patients.
