Abstract The aim of this evaluation was to determine whether normoglycemia after successful K.P. transplantation can stabilize or normalize ocular complications of diabetes mellitus. The analysis of the results revealed no significant difference between the study and the control group in the rate of progression or regression of diabetic retinopathy. However the visual acuity and retinopathy score were stable in the majority of the eyes in both groups. In most of the patients. diabetic retinopathy did not deteriorate even in those with severe proliferative retinopathy. Besides stabilization. in some subjects regressive processes could be detected. Our observations are consistent with most, but not all studies that have examined the course of diabetic retinopathy after pancreas transplantation. The data is in agreement. with Bandello 1992 who compares the ophthalmic follow up in a small number of transplant et al, recipients and showed no relevant variation between the PK group {22 eyes] and KA group {II eyes]. Also our results are in agreement with Ulbig et al, 1987 and Zech et al, 1992 who show stable visual acuity and retinopathy grade in the majority of the. |
