Abstract

Screening of 1000 school children (5 - 15 years old) for insulin - dependent diabetes mellitus (IDD~) , formerly called juvenile-onset diabetes, revealed that the prevalence rate among Egyptian primary school-age children is 2 %0• A sociomedical questionnaire was completed by 30 InD”, patients and their families. The male/fell18le ratio was 1.1 : 1. The n~an age of onset was 8 years (± 3.4) in boys and 7 years (± 3.8) in girls. There was low incidence early in life (below 3 years old), peak incid¬enoe in widdle to late childhood ( 5 - 11 years old) and decline at puberty (13 - 15 years old). The peak of inc¬idence was earlier in females (9 years old) than males (11 years old). Nearly half (46.7 %) of the diabetic ohildren had one or more known diabetic among his relations. The proportion of affeoted relatives suffering fro~ both IDD~ and NIDDM was 5.) %.
