Abstract This study was carried out in the neonatal care unit of Mansoura University Hospital and its .follow up clinic, a child welfare centre and one of the special clinics in an attempt to represent various socigeconomic and educational standards within our 10- cality. The aim of this work was to assess post-natal growth and development of some full-term infants as well as low birth weight within the first year of their life. Parameters chosen for assessement of growth were: weight, length and head circumference and for assessement of development were some milestones of development as: Smiling, laughing, head lag disappearance, voluntary grasp, sitting steady back straight, crawling, standing supported and walking supported; and some reflexes as: Moro reflex disappearance, stepping reflex disappearance, Landau reflex & leg support reflex. Cases included were 126 full term newborns, their physical growth & developmental outcome was determined throughout the first year and compared with those of Abbassy & similar studies done abroad. A group of low birth weight infants including 224 preterm & 62 term SGA were also assessed for their physical growth & development throughout the first year and compared with each other and with those of full term. |
