Abstract

The present research concerned with studying the impacts of some industrial activities generally at Damietta Governorate and particularly at a new developing industrial zone (New Damietta Industrial Zone) in a new developing community (New Damietta City), on the surrounding ecosystem. So, the sampling locations were chosen to represent the probably dangered areas and those that may be affected by discharging of the industrial effluents from different industrial plants of New Damietta Industrial Zone, on different aquatic pathways around and neighbouring to this area. Also, they were chosen to cover all of the varities of water quality found at this habitat. Accordingly, twenty-two sampling sites have been selected representing the aquatic environment at the study area. These sites are divided into three sections. Section one extends from Mediterranean sea coast at New Damietta City in the East to Mediterranean Sea Coast at Gammassa in the west. Meanwhile, section two extends from Kafer El-Batikh in the south to the Navigation canal in the north passing through Sanania village. However, section three Extends from Meet El-Khouly Abdella village to El-Zarka city. Representative samples of water and sediment were collected from different localities at two seasons, Summer 2004 and Winter 2005. Water and sediment samples from different sites were analyzed for both physical and chemical characteristics and some heavy metals concentration (Zn, Cu, Pb, Mn and Cd). Mechanical analysis of sediment have been carried out for all samples. Two industrial effluents from two plants at New Damietta industrial Zone were chosen to be subjected to the pretreatment processes. Samples of different chemical and physical characteristic have been obtained from an oil food plant; because it is one of the most biggest industrial units in this area; and the other from a car washing station; because it is one of the most dispersed activities not only at Damietta Governorate but also all over Egypt. However, they are analyzed for both physical and chemical characteristics and some heavy metals concentration (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn). The results of the study showed that there are a variety of the levels of the different studied parameters. The suggested series of pretreatment techniques for the two effluent is highly effective in reducing several parameters from the two effluents. Furthermore, the investigated characteristics of he two effluents were removed by a percent that improve the effluents to comply with their threshold limit (Decree No. 44/2000). Moreover, it is proved that the coagulation of the two effluents with the dose of 5 g/L alum added as a solid is more effective than the same dose with the lime dose.
