Abstract

Two storage and field experiments were conducted at ElBaramon Laboratories and Experimental Farm, Horticulture Research Institute during 2003 and 2004 and 2005. This to study the effect of different storage treatments, i.e. essential oils (individuals or pairs) / ambient temperature and cold storage on storability of tubers (saved from summer harvesting) of two potato cvs (Diamant and Spunta) during 9 months storage period. Also, the agronomical performance of their plants during the subsequent summer seasons. The objectives of this work are as follows: 1. Studying the effect of some extracted natural essential oils / ambient temperature and also low temperature storage treatments on sprouting, weight loss, damage, bioconstituents, phytohormone content, antioxidental enzymes activity and quality characters of potato tubers of Diamant and Spunta potato cvs at the end of storage. 2. Estimating processing characters, i.e., colour, crispness, taste and odour of chips produced. 3. Studying growth and yield performances of the plants originated from tubers / seeds of the mentioned treatments. 4. Establishing potent, safe and cost effective technique for storing potato tubers for different uses. 5. Feasibility of using local potato tubers from summer harvesting following long term storage on ambient temperature as seeds for subsequent summer planting.. It could be recommended with spraying potato tubers of (Diamant cv) with mint oil (5 ml/L) or anise oil + mint oil (2.5 ml + 2.5 ml/ L) 3 times during long term storage (9 months) as efficient natural, safety and cost effective technique for storing potato tubers for processing and fresh consumption. Also, it could be recommended with spraying potato tubers of Diamant and Spunta with fennel oil (5 ml/L) or anise oil combined with eucalyptus oil (2.5 + 2.5 ml/L), 3 times during long term storage / ambient temperature as better natural, safety and cost effective technique for storing potato tubers from summer yield to be used as local seeds for obtaining considerable yield in the subsequent summer season.
