Abstract

Development of many hematopoietic malignancies is presumed to be due to abnormalities in the balance between cell proliferation and their ability to undergo apoptosis. A candidate molecule to influence the apoptosis balance in cancer was recently identified as survivin, a member of inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) gene family. The present work was designed to determine the serum levels of survivin in a number of patients with NHL at diagnosis. The present study comprised 31 patients with DLBCL in addition to 12 apparently healthy individuals as a control group. The results of this study could be summarized as follows: The serum survivin level shows a highly significant elevation in patients when compared to controls.A Significant negative correlation was elicited between serum survivin levels and response to therapy.Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was done to determine a cut off point help in prediction of patients outcome. We can predict patient`s outcome with 90.7% specificity but sensitivity decreased to 57.1%
Conclusion: Serum survivin levels were significantly high in patients with diffuse large B cell lymphoma suggesting its role in lymphomagenesis as well as disease progression. Survivin is an important predictor of prognosis, response to therapy, and hence patient outcome in DLBCL.
