Abstract

A furuncle is an inflammatory, usually necrotic, skin nodule that develops from preceding folliculitis. It is a deeper infection of the hair follicle than folliculitis and consists of an inflammatory nodule with a pustular center through which hair emerges and it often evolves into an abscess. S. aureus is a virulent organism that has the ability to acquire antimicrobial resistance easily, which makes treatment difficult. The development of resistance to antimicrobial agents by Staphylococci is a major concern primarily because they are still frequently associated with hospital and community acquired infections. In conclusion, the frequent and unnecessary use of either topical or systemic antibiotics which is sometimes non indicated resulted in rapid emergence of resistance even to new treatment options including vancomycin which was considered the best treatment for MRSA. Also the inappropriate hygiene and malpractice in hospitals and among health workers increases the occurrence and colonization of resistant strains of S. aureus.
