Abstract

This study was aimed to assess the efficacy of compomer and chemical glass ionomer as root end filling materials. For that purpose, compomer and chemical glass ionomer were compared to amalgam; the most commonly used root end filling materia. Forty five patients were selected for this study. They were divided into three groups, each of fifteen patients, for compomer, chemical glass ionomer, or amalgam as a root end filling material. from the results of this study it was found that a high success rate was achieved in those patients who had their root apices filled with compomer, and nearly the same results in both chemical glass ionomer and amalgam. These findings may be due to adherence to ideal surgical steps, complete removal of pathology, proper removal of the infected apex, and adherence to manufacturer instructions.. According to many authors, high success rate with compomer as a result of using adhesive bonded between root canal filling and comopmer also the fluroide emission from compomer which act as antibacterial agent. However, compomer and chemical glass ionomer seems to be a promising material and longterm studies are mandatory to confirm its effectiveness.
