Abstract This prospective randomized study was carried out on forty patients (of either sex) aged 65 years or more (ASA grade II or III). They were scheduled for ambulatory endoscopic biliary procedures in Mansoura Gastroenterology surgical Center. Patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups each of twenty (closed envelope) according to the anaesthetic technique: Group A: Total intravenous anaesthesia was induced with propofol at a dose of 1.5-2 mg.kg-1I.V. bolus followed immediately by continuous propofol infusion in a descending schedule rate (150-20 micrograme.kg-1.min-1). Group B: Inhalational induction of anaesthesia was started with sevoflurane 1-2% in o2 with gradual increase by 1% every few breaths till loss of eye lash reflex (maximum concentration not exceeding 8%). Anaesthesia was maintained by 1-2% sevoflurane inspiratory concentration. From this study, we can conclude that, sevoflurane is a good alternative for propofol in endoscopic biliary procedures in elderly patients because of its haemodynamic stability and rapid recovery profile. |
