Abstract

Introduction: colorectal polyps are a discrete mass of tissue that protrudes into the lumen of the bowel, Polyps in pediatric patient are juvenile polyps with negligible malignant potential unless they are part of a polyposis syndrome, The most common polyposis syndromes are familial polyposis coli, Gardner?s syndrom and Peutz­Jeghers syndrome. Virtual colonoscopy is a new method of imaging the colon in which thin­section, helical CT is used to generate high resolution, two­dimension axial image, with the use of available soft wave programs to render a three­dimension images of the colon simulating those obtained with convetional colonoscopy are then reconstructed off­line. Aim of The Work The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of virtual colonoscopy and conventional colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal polyps as a cause of rectal bleeding in children . This study comprised 32 Children (22 males, 10 females) with mean age + SD =8.1 + 3.8, ranged from (1.5y to 17 yrs) presented to the out patient clinic of Pediatric Gasteroenterology and Hepatology Unit , Mansoura University Children Hospital All children included in this study were subjected to full history taking, physical examination, some laboratory investigation, virtual colonoscopy at morning before conventional colonoscopy and pathological diagnosis of excised polyps. Results revealed In our study , we detect sensitivity per­polyp was overall 80%, and increase by increase the polyp size, and sensitivity per patient was 69% , while specificity was 80%. The use of intravenously administered contrast material significantly improved reader confidence in the assessment of bowel wall conspicuity. Conclusion Virtual colonoscopy might become the firststep for colon examination unless biopsy or therapeutic intervention is known to be necessary. Recommendations: Further studies are needed to overcome the obstacles that facing us in bowel cleaning in children.
