Abstract
Objective: To assess the validity of fetal echocardiography in diagnosing fetal congenital heart disease in high risk population. Methods: During 24 months duration, all pregnant women with risk factor of fetal congenital heart disease were referred for fetal echocardiography. Indications of referral and their yield as well as validity of fetal chocardiography were evaluated. Results: Inclusive of 124 fetal echocardiography were performed on 100 cases, 20 % of cases had significant cardiac defects, 28.3% of cases were referred because of family history of CHD. The second common referral indication was the presence of extracardiac anomalies. The highest yield of clinically significant CHD was in cases referred due to the presence of abnormal cardiac shadow on obstetric ultrasound scan and extracardiac anomalies. Maternal diabetes was one of the least yield indication. The sensitivity of fetal echocardiography was 94.4% and the specificity was 100%. Conclusion: Fetal echocardiography is a valuable tool in diagnosing congenital heart disease in high risk pregnancy with high sensitivity and specificity.
