Abstract

Soft rot is one of the most important bacterial diseases of potato, it caused by Erwinia carotovora ssp carotovora. These research work was conducted to achieve integrated control as an effective mean for controlling potato bacterial soft rot in Dakahlyia Governorate using two tools: control by essential oils and biological control using actinomycetes. Twenty eight commercial plant essential oils were screened in vitro to evaluate their inhibitory activities against E. carotovora carotovora, from which nine oils exhibited inhibitory activities. The oil of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon oil) was the most active oil. On the other hand fourty isolates of actinomycetes isolated from soil were screened in vitro to evaluate their antagonistic capacity against E. carotovora carotovora from which eight isolates exhibited antagonistic capacity. The most active isolate was identified as Streptomyces sioyaensis. Cinnamon oil and S. sioyaensis were tested for controlling bacterial soft rot of potato under greenhouse conditions. It was estimated that treatment of potato tuber either by cinnamon oil or S. sioyaensis perior to sowing leading to high reduction in disease incidence at harvest time and after storage. Using them in combination was more useful.
