Abstract

This open controlled study was carried out on thirty six patients subjected to elective thyroidectomy for multinodular goiter. General anesthesia was induced by thiopentone sodium, succinylcholine and maintained with isofluorane. Patients were divided into three groups: group I (n=12) received general anaesthesia . GroupII {n=12}: bilateral superficial cervical blocks were done by using 0.75% ropivacaine 10 ml in each side before general anaesthesia. GroupIII {n=12) bilateral superficial cervical blocks were done by using 0.75% ropivacaine and morphine 5 mg before general anaesthesia . Hemodynamic and sedation , vomiting and visual analogue scale score were assessed in the three groups groups at certain intervals. the addition of morphine to ropivacaine in bilateral superficial cervical plexus blocks done before before thyroidectomy prolongs the duration of postoperative analgesia with no effects on haemodynamics and and no increase in the incidence of side effects.
