Abstract Several striazine containing compounds were synthesized and tested as potential antiviral agents. In addition, many benzimidazole derivatives were reported to possess antiviral activity. These observations promoted the idea of the synthesis of certain novel series of striazines or striazine derivatives bridged with benzimidazole moiety to attain compounds with potent antiviral activity with minimal toxicity. The purity of the newly synthesized compounds was checked by TLC, and the structures of these compounds were confirmed by elemental microanalysis and some of them were studied with IR, 1HNMR and Mass spectroscopy. Ten representative derivatives of the newly synthesized compounds were tested for their antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) using the plaque reduction assay. The results showed that most of the tested compounds display marked activity. The most active compounds were selected for evaluation of their cytotoxicity against Vero cells. |
