Abstract

Low vision rehabilitation is a neglected yet an important pa11 of
ophthalmic practice especially if the increasing numbers of visually
impaired patients are put in account
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of low
vision aids in improving both distance and near vision.
The present study included 50 low vision patient who attended the
low vision clinic of Mansoura Ophthalmic Center in the period from May
2002 to february 2003. The age of the patients ranged from 6 to 88 years.
All patients underwent full his taking, full ophthalmologic examination
with special attention to the evaluation of visual function including distance
and near visual acuity measurement, refraction and assessment of central
visual field, Magnification required was calculated then trial with different
types of LV As was performed, Training of the patients on how to use their
preferred LVAs was an essential part of the methodology of this work.
Distance visual acuity was correct using distance telescopes. and
all the cases showed an improvement that proved to be extremely
statistically significant. Near visual acuity also improved significant and
most of the patient’) enrolled in this work preferred microscopes as a near
aid, Improving near visual acuity was the main goal of the vast majority of
patients of this work.
The clumsy appearance, the high cost. the short working distance
and the easy toss of focus were the main complaints reported by patients
included in this study.
