Abstract Acute abdominal pain is one of the most common presenting complaints in the emergency department. The aim of this work is to study the incidence of causes of acute abdominal pain among patients, admitted to Mansoura University emergency hospital. This retrospective study has reviewed the medical records of 6476 patients who were admitted at the Mansoura University emergency hospital within 19 weeks. 514 patients have been admitted with the complaint of acute abdominal pain representing (7.93%) of total hospital admission. They were 226 patients presented with medical causes of acute abdominal pain representing (44%) of patients. 268 patients presented with surgical causes of acute abdominal pain (52.1%) and 20 patients presented with gynaecological causes of acute abdominal pain (3.9%). Acute appendicitis was the most common cause of acute abdomen, in general, where it was diagnosed in (42.4%) of patients with acute abdomen. Gastrointestinal tract diseases &hepatobiliary diseases came in the second order of frequency where it was diagnosed in (11.3%) of patients with acute abdomen. Recommendation: The acute abdomen may be due to surgical, medical and or gynaecological conditions, so a team work including different specialities is recommended for initial evaluation and followup in emergency hospitals. A complaintspecific history and physical examination should be performed before a differential diagnosis is formulated or ancillary testing is performed. The use of a standardized history and physical examination form increases accuracy for diagnosing abdominal pain in the ED patients with consequent reduction of mortality |
