Abstract

This work deals with the effect of changing the physical parameters of gamma camera used in recording the distribution of radionuclide ventriculography. Assessment of ventricular function is an important diagnostic tool in heart diseases. Equilibrium gated blood pool (GBP) imaging is a noninvasive means for obtaining relevant parameters of cardiac performance. The phenomenon of interest is the volume change of the left or right ventricle. After the cardiovascular blood pool is labeled with an appropriate radionuclide. The work aims to study and optimize the following physical parameters of the gamma camera: (i) Image acquisition parameters including effect of alternation (Matrix size, Distance, Gantry angle, and Frame number) on GBP parameters (ejection fraction (EF), peak filling rate (PFR), peak ejection rate (PER), time peak filling rate (TPFR), time peak ejection rate (TPER), and fraction filling (FF)). (ii) Image processing parameters including effect of filters alternation on GBP parameters (EF, PFR, PER, TPFR, TPER, and FF). This study includes fifty patients with various types of malignancy. Following intravenous injected stannous pyrophosphate (PYP) solution (0.9% NaCl) in a dose of 15 mg/kg of body weight; then 99mTc (2030mCi) was injected intravenously 30 minutes later. The patient lies in supine position on a gamma camera connected to R wave triggering monitor. The left arm was put behind the patient?s head. The image acquisition and processing parameters were investigated. All data obtained have been studied and analyzed using Excel software program to obtain the descriptive statistics (Average and Standard d(Rb(Beviation (SD)), and analytical statistics Pvalue which denotes the level of significance. According to the present study, the recommended optimized parameters for GBP are: for data acquisition the matrix size is 64x64x8, frame numbers more than or equal 16 frames per cycle, gantry angle between 350 to 450, distance less than or equal 5cm. For data processing the reconstruction using Wiener filter is preferable. When the previous optimized acquisition and processing data are used for GBP, it is found that a reduced noise, better contrast, and improved image fidelity have been achieved.
