Abstract

The present work was carried out on (20) clinically healthy donkeys and had radiographically pastern free. This study was performed in Surgery Dept. Fac.Of Vet. Medicine, Mansoura University. The animals were classified into four experimental groups, 5 animals of each. In the first three groups the surgical arthrodesis of the pastern joint was performed by curettage of articular cartilage by drilling in the first group, application of two 4.5 mm cortical screws inserted with lag effect with paralled or crisscrossing procedures in the second and the third groups respectively. While, in the fourth group chemical arthrodesis was performed by intraarticular injection of sodium monoiodoacetate (MIA) through three injections in a dose of 80mg with 10 days interval. In all groups the limbs were immobilized by plaster of Paris cast postoperatively. from proceeding results it could be concluded that, The use of two 4.5mm cortical screws were efficient for immobilization of the distal end of the first phalanx and proximal end of the second phalanx in lag technique in donkeys resulting in favorable outcome in PIPJ arthrodesis . The time needed for ankylosis and disappearnce of lameness (90 days) was shorter than the curettage of articular cartilage (120 days) through clinical and radiographical evaluation due to the power of fixation and compression made by lag screws.
