Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate (he immunological and Clinical effects of the leukotriene receptor antagonist (Montelukast) versus the inhaled steroid (Fluticasone propionate) in asthmatic children. The present work comprised 36 patients with moderate persistent asthma (24 were males and 12 were females) with age range from 6-14 years. They were selected randomly from Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit, Mansoura University, Children Hospital in the period from September 2000 to February 2001.They all met the diagnostic criteria of Scheffer et aI., 1991. Consent was taken from the parents of all patients. They were classified into two groups: 1- Montelukast group: 17 cases ( 11 were males and 6 were females) with mean age (9.1 76 ± 0.554 SEM). They received montelukast 5 mg once daily at bedtime for 28 consecutive days. 11- FlutiCllsone pl’opionate group: 19 cases (13 were males and 6 were females) with mean age (9 .868 ± 0.524 SEM). They received inhaled flutieasone propionate 100 ug twice daily for 28 consecutive days. III- Control group: Ibis group comprised 18 healthy children without any apparent evidence of allergic disease with mean age ( 10.61 ± 0.445SEM).
