Abstract

Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms. ‎It possesses unique properties that are being defined and applied to ‎biological systems as well as to clinical practice. As a molecule ‎containing a large excess of energy, it manifests bactericidal, virucidal, ‎and fungicidal action that may make it a treatment of choice in certain ‎conditions and an adjunct to treatment in others. Ozone therapy is ‎clearly established as a treatment of diabetes and diabetic ‎complications, including diabetic foot ulcers. It exerts beneficial effects ‎because it improves glycemic control by increasing insulin secretion or ‎its effectiveness. It improves the diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Also, ‎it can improve blood circulation and oxygen delivery to ischemic ‎tissues, corrects the chronic oxidative stress, associated with diabetes ‎mellitus and its complications. Ozone therapy can be used in body ‎weight reduction. It acts as a lipolytic agent, when given ‎subcutaneously. Ozone therapy is contra-indicated in thyrotoxicosis ‎and may be useful in the treatment of hypothyrodism and nodular ‎lesions of the thyroid.‎
