Abstract

Autoimmune disease is defined as a clinical syndrome caused by the activation of T cells or B cells, or both, in the absence of an ongoing infection or other apparent cause. Both autoreactive T cells and autoantibodies can damage tissues. Autoimmune disorders represent a breakdown in tolerogenic mechanisms and thus often occur in clusters or aggregations. It has been suggested that T helper cells type 1 are critical to the induction of autoimmune disease through the recruitment of inflammatory cells and mediators, whereas T helper cells type 2 protect against disease. Autoantibodies also cause damage through the formation of immune complexes, cytolysis or phagocytosis of target cells, and interference with cellular physiology. Endocrine Diseases Most likely Caused by Autoimmune Mechanisms: 1. Chronic lymphocytic (Hashimoto’s) thyroiditis. 2. Graves’ Disease. 3. Postpartum thyroiditis. 4. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. 5. Type B insulin resistance. 6. Autoimmune Oophritis. 7. Autoimmune Orchitis. 8. Addison’s disease. 9. Autoimmune Hypophysitis. 10. Autoimmune Hypoparathyroidism. 11. Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndromes.
