Abstract

The present work was undertaken to study the effect of parasympathetic denervation on nitric oxide content of the parotid gland in albino rat. Tympanic plexus neurectomy resulted in: marked atrophic changes in the parotid gland, marked reduction in the nerve fibers around the acini and disappearance of NADPH- diaphorase reactivity around almost of the acini. Persistent NADPH- diaphorase reactivity around the remaining acini could be explained by the following: - Parasympathectomy may be incomplete. - Some non-adrenergic, non cholinergic nerve fibers which escaped surgery. - Postganglionic sympathetic fibers. - Unknown nervous pathways. - Alternative secretory fibers from facial nerve and chorda tympani nerve. - Other enzymes other than nitric oxide synthase.
