Abstract The present study was done on 21 diabetics with foot problems attending the Diabetes and Endocrinology outpatient clinic in Mansoura University Hospital Aim of the work The aim of this work is to evaluate the diagnostic role of Magnetic resonance imaging in diabetic foot problems; delineation of the extent of infection in the fascial planes, early detection of osseous involvement, differentiation between cellulitis, osteomyelitis and neuropathic osteoarthropathy and to identify the predisposing factors and their relation to patient’s life style. Results The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of X ray according to MRI in diagnosis of soft tissue lesions was 31.6%, 100% and 38% respectively, while in diagnosis of bony lesions was 22.2%, 83.3% and 57.1% respectively, and in diagnosis of joint lesions was 42.8%, 92.8% and 76.1% respectively. This means that radiographic evaluation of diabetic foot problems is fraught with error. Summary and Conclusion We recommend MRI examination to be performed in every case of diabetic foot infections to exclude osteomyelitis, as intervention before the development of osteomyelitis allows greater tissue conservation as well as to define the extent of inflammatory soft tissue involvement. |
