Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus is a multisystem autoimmune disease with a variable course and prognosis. Although periods of active disease are associated with impairment, these episodes may also cause permanent damage. Quality of life as an outcome variable has become an important measure in clinical research. Making a transition from a ”biomedical model” of health to one that incorporates the social aspects of disease, clinicians and researchers dealing with chronic illness now incorporate quality of life measures into clinical practice and research. HRQL scores can be utilized to evaluate responses to changes in therapy, and to direct clinical decision-making, adding an important dimension to holistic, quality care for SLE patients. The study included one hundred and twelve SLE patients. The patients included 97 females and 15 males with ages ranged from 13 to 57 years years. From our study, we found that SLE has shown significant impact on the well-being of patients and contributes to the significant morbidity associated with it. Health-related quality of life in patients with SLE can be assessed by SF-36 V2 questionnaire. The SF-36 V2 questionnaire is short, easy to administers and correlates with both disease activity and damage as regard overall scores and its all domains.
