Abstract

Serum and CSF levels of IL-1?, IL-6, TNF-?, and C9 elevated in patients with HIE and correlates with the disease severity. Elevated serum and CSF levels of IL-6 and C9 and CSF level of IL-1? correlate with poor neurodevelopmental outcome at 6 and 12 months of age. Measurement of these parameters in the neonates with HIE help predict early those at high risk for subsequent brain injury. The use of these markers should offer the possibility of identifying infants most likely to benefit from early intervention. High CSF/plasma ration of IL-1?, TNF-?, and C9 might suggest their local production in CNS triggered by hypoxic-ischemic insult. Survival rate of grade I HIE babies (100%) was significantly high compared to grade II (85.7%) and grade III (8.3%). A significant relation between elevated CSF and serum levels of IL-6 and decreased survival rate that might be attributed to its neurotrophic effect. Meanwhile, no significant relation between decreased survival and CSF levels of IL-1?, TNF-?, and C9. A significant relation between high level of serum TNF-? and decreased survival. The same finding doesn’t apply to elevated TNF-? CSF level. No significant relation between serum levels of IL-1? and C9 and survival rate.
