Abstract Objectives: Pain relief after thoracotomy can be achieved with thoracic epidural analgesia. Pharmacodynamic differences between bupivacaine and ropivacaine were reported. We aimed to compare thoracic epidural analgesia after thoracotomy using either bupivacaine - fentanyl mixture or ropivacaine - fentanyl mixture regarding the respiratory parameters as well as the hemodynamic and analgesic effects Methods: After general anesthesia, 30 patients were randomly allocated to receive intermittent epidural bupivacaine - fentanyl (n = 15) or ropivacaine- fentanyl (n = 15). Heart rate, mean blood pressure, respiratory rate, arterial blood gases were recorded. Motor power, pain score, and side effects were evaluated over 24 hours postoperatively. Results: Hemodynamic, respiratory and gasometric variables were comparable in both groups. Analgesia and motor power were also comparable in both groups. The incidence of side effects did not significantly differ between the two groups. Conclusion: Ropivacaine - fentanyl epidural analgesia after thoracotomy is comparable to bupivacaine - fentanyl analgesia. |
