Abstract

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a common ophthalmic problem. Several studies were conducted to study the pathology of nasolacrimal duct obstruction using biopsies from either the lacrimal sac or the nasolacrimal duct. The results of these studies were somewhat controversial. So the objective of this study was to study the pathology of nasolacrimal duct obstruction using biopsies from both the nasolacrimal duct and the lacrimal sac. Our study included 92 cases of nasolacrimal duct obstructions in 86 patients who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy operations between 1 I 8 I 2001 and 1 I 6 I 2002. Their age ranged from 2 to 72 years. Full history taking and full ophthalmological examination with special attention to the lacrimal system were done to all cases. Dacryocystogram was also done to all cases except cases ofencystedmucoceles. All cases underwent ENT examination, as well, by an ENT specialist. Biopsies were collected from the nasolacrimal duct, using a new instrument (the spiral disseetor),and the lacrimal sac during external dacryocystorhinostomy operations. Biopsies were then preserved in formaline 10 % and sent for examination by a pathologist. Pathological examination of the specimens showed varying degrees of non specific and fibrosis in all
